IFI Training Topic – August 19 Day 1: Fundamentals of Fastener Materials – From the Mill to the Header – Automotive and Industrial Version
COURSE DETAILS:
Besides steel have you ever wondered what materials fasteners are made of? Have you ever considered how special cold heading quality material really is? Have you ever wondered how steel for fasteners is produced? These questions and many more will be answered in this class. The class is divided into three parts, the different materials used for fasteners, producing hot rolled rod, and converting hot rolled rod into cold drawn, high-quality wire. In exploring the different materials used, participants will learn about plain carbon and alloy steels, aluminum, Titanium, Stainless Steels, Copper alloys and Nickel alloys. Participants will then learn how steel wire is produced, converting scrap and iron units in the melt shop to long billets, breaking those billets down into coils of hot drawn rod or bar, and improving the quality by converting hot drawn rod to cold drawn wire. Participants will learn how hot drawn rod is processed top provide better dimensional and more uniform internal structure characteristics. At the conclusion of this class participants should have a better idea of why and when different materials are used for fasteners, where wire comes from, and why it is considered a premium product. This is an ideal class for engineers, quality, materials, manufacturing leadership, sales, and anyone wanting to better understand manufacturing fasteners.
Come the next day and see all of these principals come to life in a mill tour of Charter Steel’s Saukville campus. There, participants will see the Melt Shop where scrap and iron units are compounded and cast into billets, the Hot Rolling Mill where billets are transformed into long continuous coils of rod or bar, and Wire Processing where hot drawn rod is cleaned, drawn, spheroidized annealed, coated, and packaged for delivery to the customer. Seeing pictures or a video is impressive but nothing like experiencing it in real life.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
Engineers, quality, tool designers, materials, sales, manufacturing leadership, quoters, and anyone that would like to understand where cold heading quality raw material comes form.
