INDEPENDENCE, OHIO (May 21, 2024) – The Industrial Fasteners Institute (IFI) is delighted to announce that Dr. Salim Brahimi, IFI’s Director of Engineering & Technology, has been honored with the prestigious Walter C. Voss Award, presented by ASTM International. This award recognizes individuals in engineering and/or science who have made notable contributions to knowledge in the field of building technology.
Established in 1962, the Walter C. Voss Award commemorates the legacy of Prof. Walter C. Voss, former head of the Department of Building Engineering and Construction at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Fellow of ASTM, and former Chair of Committee C07 on Lime, who significantly contributed to ASTM’s research and standardization efforts.
Salim Brahimi’s outstanding contributions to materials science, specifically in the field of hydrogen embrittlement, and his dedication to the advancement of fastener standards and standards for bolted connections have earned him this prestigious recognition.
Salim Brahimi has served as IFI’s Director of Engineering & Technology since 2015. He holds a PhD in materials engineering from McGill University in Montreal, and has accumulated over 35 years of experience in the fastener industry. Dr. Brahimi has previously served as chair of ASTM Committee F16 on Fasteners, chair of ASTM Committee F07 on Aerospace and Aircraft, and is currently serving as head of delegation for Canada to ISO Committee TC2 on Fasteners, chair of the Research Council on Structural Connections (RCSC), chair of ASME Committee B18 and member of the SAE Fastener Committee.
“I am deeply moved to receive the Walter C. Voss Award which recognizes both scientific contributions to knowledge and the transfer of knowledge to engineering practices. For research to be useful, it must have a real-world impact. Being active in standards development is an ideal way to bridge the gap between research and standards. The journey has been long and challenging but also fulfilling because the outcome is advancements in fastener standards and industry practices that are significant and enduring. I share this honor with many peers and colleagues, a few of whom are no longer with us, whose support and collaboration were essential to reach this point. I am grateful and humbled to call them friends.”
The Walter C. Voss Award is a testament to Salim’s outstanding achievements in service of the fastener industry. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Salim for this well-deserved honor.
