From the Hill to Your Business: How IFI’s Government Affairs Program Works for You

Did you know that one of the many benefits of IFI membership is our robust government affairs program? For over 20 years, IFI has been actively advocating for the fastener industry before Congress and regulatory agencies, ensuring that “if you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.” This well-known saying rings true, as government affairs professionals understand that if you aren’t part of the discussion on issues concerning your business, you won’t like the decisions that get made. 

In a complex political and regulatory environment, IFI works tirelessly to keep members informed and represented. This year, a significant portion of our focus has been on the evolving tariff landscape. This includes keeping a close eye on the expansion of Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum, actively advocating for the inclusion of fasteners in any steel derivative lists, and pressing for exemptions like the necessary quantities of wire rod that are sourced from Canada. 

IFI’s expertise in government affairs is built on decades of experience. Our team has long understood the impact of legislative and regulatory decisions on the fastener industry. We continue to build on successes, such as rewriting language to ensure domestic fastener manufacturers selling to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) could obtain raw materials without having separate supply chains. We’ve also secured a definition for fasteners in relation to export controls, and advocated for steel tariff removal, as seen in the 2002 Bush Administration steel tariffs where relief was successfully secured. 

The value of this program for our members is clear. Just recently, in early June, we hosted a webinar focused on these critical government affairs issues, and we were thrilled to see 170 members attend to gain direct insight into how these developments could impact their businesses.
